Baby-on-the-Way Dog Readiness Program

Bringing a baby home can present with many challenges for your dog. Without the necessary skills to cope, this sudden change in routine, sights, sounds and smells can be very confusing and overwhelming.

These sessions fill in the gaps left uncovered by good manners training and childbirth education classes. Together we will create a plan catered to your family’s needs. This plan covers everything from homecoming, implementing safety strategies, teaching your dog valuable skills, reading your dogs body language, how to safely implement parent guided interactions, dog and toddler enrichment and so much more!

The Goals of This Program

  • Increase infant and child safety around dogs.
  • Decrease stress and anxiety for new parents who already have dogs.
  • Increase successful dog/child relationships and family harmony.
  • Decrease the number of dogs surrendered to shelters each year because of changes at home.
  • Assist families with problem solving challenges between toddlers and dogs.
  • Decrease bites to young children by teaching the fundamentals of dog communication and behaviour.
  • Prepare new families integrating a baby into a home with a dog.

How the Program Works

To help us tailor the program to your unique situation we begin by learning about you AND your dog.

  • Review of your dogs medical records, learning history and current challenges.
  • Identify factors that may influence the transition to life with a baby.
  • Develop a safe and harmonious home environment for both dogs and infants.
  • Tailored steps to safely integrate your baby in a home with dogs.
  • How to prepare your dog for changes in the household as your baby grows.
  • Techniques for desensitizing your dog to infant-related stimuli, such as baby gear, toys, and clothing.
  • How to recognize signs of stress or discomfort in dogs and infants.
  • Teach your dog essential skills to safely navigate a home with a young child.
  • Ongoing support after birth to troubleshoot any new challenges.

Each session includes a detailed report tailored to your dogs individual needs. You will also receive handouts and videos to supports your training journey.
